Homecoming will come to life through a series of intentional and
immersive gatherings that center Black Miami’s connection to the Everglades, blending history, art, environmental justice, and communal healing. This initiative will unfold in three key phases: community outreach and engagement, creative programming, and documentation for long-term impact.
⥈The first step is community outreach and engagement—building relationships with predominantly Black schools, Miami residents, local artists, environmental activists, and Indigenous knowledge-keepers. Through conversations and smaller gatherings, we will invite participants to learn about the Florida Everglades with the help of my partner naturalist, writer, and Everglades park ranger Dylann Turffs. This phase will also involve securing key partnerships with organizations that align with our mission, such as local cultural institutions, environmental groups, and community-led initiatives.
⥈Finally, Homecoming will be documented and archived to create a sustainable and evolving body of work. Through audio recordings, photography, written reflections, and a short film, we will capture the voices and experiences of participants, ensuring that these stories continue beyond each gathering. This archive will be shared with cultural institutions, schools, and community spaces, expanding the reach of Homecoming and inviting future generations to engage with its lessons.
⥈The next phase is creative programming and activation—curating immersive experiences that include guided excursions into the Everglades, interactive storytelling workshops, and communal meals where shared history is honored. Poetry, movement, and music will serve as tools for reflection and reconnection, allowing participants to express their relationship with the land through their artistic practices. We will integrate land-based teachings, helping participants understand the Everglades as a place of history and a space of belonging and future care.
